Six more persons were detained in the case on smuggling 179 boxes of "Ashima" cigarettes in Cahul, including Border Police employees.
The Security and Intelligence Service jointly with the Prosecutor's Office for Combating Organized Crime and Special Cases (PCCOCS) carried out searches in relation to the case of smuggling scheme with 179 boxes of “Ashima” cigarettes, uncovered in July this year.
The searches were conducted at the homes of the persons named in the case, in Cahul and Chișinau. Following the documentation process, the SIS jointly with the Internal Protection and Anti-Corruption Service of the Ministry of Internal Affairs detained, today, three persons directly involved in the smuggling scheme, while the other three are employees of the General Inspectorate of Border Police. One of the detained employees is a former interim head of the Cahul Border Police sector and another is a former head of the “South” Regional Directorate.
Currently, the case concerns 14 people with the status of accused and suspect. Investigations continue in order to fully uncover the smuggling scheme and to determine all the circumstances of the case.
