In order to perform its duties, the Security and Intelligence Service of the Republic of Moldova carries out counterintelligence and external intelligence activity, according to the Law no. 179 of 07.07.2023.
Pursuant to article 1, paragraph (2) of the mentioned Law, the counterintelligence activity consists of all the measures, actions, operations and processes carried out by the institution in order to identify, prevent, and counteract vulnerabilities, risk factors, and threats, in accordance with the competence laid down in Law no. 136/2023 on Security and Intelligence Service.
The external intelligence activity, provided for in article 1, paragraph (3) consists of all measures, actions and operations carried out for the purpose of planning, collecting, verifying, assessing, analytical processing, storing and exploiting data and information about actual or potential possibilities, actions, plans or intentions of states or foreign organisations, anti-constitutional entities or persons, which constitute or could constitute risk factors or threats to the security of the Republic of Moldova, as well as for the purpose of obtaining information relevant for ensuring national security or for creating favourable conditions for securing and promoting the strategic interests and successfully implementing the security policy of the Republic of Moldova.
