The SIS officers, together with PCCOCS prosecutors, officers of the Customs Service and internal security of the Border Police, on Sunday, uncovered an attempt to smuggle 17,900 packs of cigarettes out of the country, through the "Costești-Stânca" border crossing point.
They were found in flagrante delicto in a means of transport, which had a double floor to hide the tobacco. As a result, the cigarettes and the means of transport were seized for confiscation, while the driver and the scheme organizer, aged 37 and 44, were detained.
Investigations continue, also concerning public officials who allegedly facilitated the smuggling attempt. At this stage, they are presumed innocent.
