Joint Operation of the SIS, NAC and Anti-Corruption Prosecutor’s Office
As a result of the informational and operative support provided by the Security and Intelligence Service, the NAC (National Anti-Corruption Centre) officers and anti-corruption prosecutors detained the head of the Military Department of the “Bogdan Petriceicu Haşdeu” State University from Cahul and a professor from the same department.
According to the preliminary data of the investigation, the mentioned suspects regularly extorted and received money from the students who had not attended the courses and examinations, or had been abroad. In exchange, they ensured those students took the oath, were awarded graduation certificates and were granted military ranks. On the basis of military service registration certificates, the students could get military identity cards to be able subsequently to hold positions with special military status.
Two criminal cases have been initiated on this matter – for passive corruption and trading in influence – which have been joined into one.
If the suspects are found guilty, they risk up to 10 years of imprisonment, a fine of up to 8000 conventional units, and deprivation of the right to hold certain public functions or to carry out certain activity within a period of 2 to 10 years.
